Packers Draft Preview-Running Backs

Every day we get a little closer to the NFL Draft, and a little closer to the start of the 2017 NFL Season.  To say that we are currently in a down time is an overstatement.  Over the course of the next few weeks leading up to the draft I will breakdown current areas of need.  I will the Packers current states at that given position as well as what prospects are in the draft that may be appealing to Uncle Ted and the Boys.  I didn’t want to bore you with Guards, so we will discuss the ‘flashy’ Running Back position.

Currently on the Packers roster the Packers have Ty Montgomery, Christine Michael, as well as Don Jackson.  Mike McCarthy was pretty adamant that there would be additional running backs on the roster prior to training camp.  I think that it goes without saying that the Packers will draft a running back this year in the draft.  What we do not know is if it will be in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.  McCarthy also said that he believes that Montgomery could be an every down back.  Personally, I do not think this position is as important as others, but it is the most fun to discuss.  Could the Packers go out and win with Ty and Christine?  Yea they can.  They did it last year.  If there is one thing that we have learned though it is that Ted likes cheap deals.  Drafting a running back in the 2nd or 3rd round locks that person in for 4-5 years on a cheap rookie deal.  Ted likes that.  With all that said, let’s take a peek at some of the running backs that might fit what the Packers are looking for.

Dalvin Cook-Will be long gone before the Packers pick. (NFL Comparison-Jamal Charles)

Leonard Fournette-Will also be long gone before the Packers pick (NFL Comparison- Adrian Peterson.)

Christian McCaffrey– Could you imagine?!  He is a versatile running back that can catch the ball out of the backfield, as well as help out in the return game. (Sounds similar to Ty Montgomery on steroids.  I would love to see Ted pick him up, first rouNCAA Football: Stanford at Washingtonnd.  This guy would add a missing dimension to an already terrific offense.  It may also solve the return game needs that the Packers have had since Super Bowl 31 when Desmond
Howard housed that kickoff. My gut feeling is the Patriots draft him and he ends up being an NFL Hall of Famer and one of the most hated players in the NFL because of it.  (NFL Comparison-Danny Woodhead) I wonder why…

Joe Mixon- Without question one of the most intriguing prospects in the draft.  Had he not had the domestic abuse issue a few seasons ago he would be a first round draft pick.  With that black cloud hanging over him he has been taken off of some teams draft Mixonboards, and rightfully so.  The Packers did bring him in for a visit, so there is obvious interest.  He has only rushed the ball 300 times in his career at Oklahoma, so he is fresh!  Ted also loves value picks, and he will slip down boards.  This is the first running back prospect that may wear the green and gold. (NFL Comparison- Latavius Murray)

Alvin Kamara– This is another intriguing prospect out of Tennessee.  Ted likes players from the PAC-12, and the SEC.  Kamara has shown the ability to move alKamaral over the field and catch passes out of the backfield as well as in the slot.  He has also shown the ability to pick up the blitz which is super important, especially considering our season hinges
on the health of number 12. Sounds say that he lacks patience as a running back, but is that really a huge issue?  We could use a one cut RB for once.  Kamara is another very viable option for the Packers in the 2nd or 3rd round. (NFL Comparison-Ty Montgomery)

D’Onta Foreman- If you want to replace Eddie Lacy with Eddie Lacy, then here is your guy.  He is already tipping the scales at 250ish.  He had a nice season for a shit Texas team last season, He is a 4.6 guy, and that is not going to be fast enough to adLacyd something new to this offense.  He struggles staying in shape(where have we heard this before?).  This is not a guy we want in Green Bay.  We have seen this ‘Dog and Pony Show with
Lacy for the past few seasons.  I could be wrong on all accounts, but why chance it.  Look at those guys above!  They look like running backs, and the film doesn’t lie.  If we want someone gasping for air after 3 plays then Foreman is our guy, if not, stay away from this pig. (NFL Comparison- Eddie Lacy.)

Dark Horse RB’s That May End up in Green Bay

Wayne Gallman (Clemson)

-TJ Logan (North Caronila)

Jeremy McNichols (Boise State)

All in all, it is really a crap shoot when trying to figure out how the Draft is going to go.  All of this could be useless if the Packers sign AP, Blount, or any free agent RB that is still out there.  What I do know is that the Packers value versatile running backs.  Whoever gets picked will also get a legitimate chance to contribute right away.  If I had a choice, I would pick Mixon.  We all hope he has learned from his mistake.  Look at Tyreek Hill with Kansas City last year.  He has a similar checkered past to Mixon, and he fell late the KC.  It does seem out of the ordinary for the Packers, but talent talks.
